When I tested the Lumix S5 II in 2023 I felt it made a compelling case for switching to Panasonic, especially for video-first users, and awarded it a full five stars. The premium Lumix S1 II is a better camera in almost every regard, so it's an easy recommendation, right? One the one hand, absolutely – it's the most capable, supercharged Lumix ever, with a partially stacked 24MP full-frame sensor, 6K video, and possibly the broadest range of video codecs for the money, plus 70fps burst shooting coupled with Panasonic's best autofocus and industry-leading image stabilization for video. However, it's also an uncharacteristically pricey Lumix. For me, Panasonic cameras have always been the affordable option, but that mantle appears to be Nikon's now. Still, if you can stomach the cost and the somewhat function-over-form feel about the Lumix S1 II, it's a true video powerhouse.
