  • Over the range 

Over the range microwaves are what you get when you combine a microwave with a kitchen hood. While it leaves the countertop free and has more features than a countertop microwave, it also costs more, and you would need help with the installation. 

  • Built-in

Finally, built-in microwaves, don’t have finished sides, and usually have to be installed in custom cabinets or counters. While this is the most expensive type of microwave based on placement, it allows for free countertop space, as well as the installation of a proper kitchen hood.
