Samsung continues to make a strong push into the tablet market. Following their successful Tab line of tablets, Samsung more recently has been using the hugely popular Galaxy Note brand as a new name for their tablets. Hence the existence of the Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet.
The new Galaxy Note 8.0, shares much of its design features with the bigger tablet, but it is more aimed as a media and entertainment device that can also serve as a productivity laptop because is has support for Samsung’s S pen.
The Galaxy Note 8.0 follows the design line and proportions of the smartphones within the Galaxy line, and it’s a sign that Samsung wants to unify its design across devices. The Galaxy Note 8.0 features a 8 inch AMOLED screen that produces clear and sharp images. On the front of the tablet there is a front facing camera, Samsung’s home button and the usual array of sensors.
At the back, there is a 5 megapixel camera for picture taking and not much else, other than the plastic covering that acts as a grip when users hold it with one hand.
The interesting design features of the Galaxy Note 8.0 are on the bottom of the device. This is where the casing for the S pen is located. The S Pen, Samsung’s stylus, comes bundled with every Galaxy Note tablet, and it’s Samsung’s main selling point and key differentiator from the competition.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 runs Android 4.1.2 JellyBean with Samsung’s Touchwiz user interface. But the true power of the software can be seen when using Samsung’s apps designed specifically for productivity and multitasking, along with the usage of the S Pen.
One of those interesting software features is the ability to split the screen and run two apps simultaneously. This works fairly well and will allow users to get work done fast and efficient.
Then there are the apps that Samsung created specifically for the S Pen. S Note is one of them, a great note taking app that recognized handwriting from the S Pen and translates it into digital text. Another one is S Planner that allows users to quickly jot down annotations to their calendar appointments. The potential is really there also for third party apps to take advantage of the S Pen and it’s 1,204 pressure points. Photoshop Touch is one of those apps.
